FAQs for Newcomers

Do I have to be of the United Church faith or have a church background to go to Appleby United?

Not at all! We welcome all people.  The United Church has a history of inclusivity and you will feel right at home whether you are already confident in your faith or if you're just trying to dig a little deeper into the bigger questions of life.

What kind of people go to Appleby United?

All kinds of people go to Appleby. There's a place for everyone, no matter whether you're on your own, part of a couple, or bringing the entire family. All ages are welcome and we promise a thought-provoking sermon, uplifting music and a warm welcome. Join us for our social time after the service and you'll get to know others in no time!

How should I dress for church?

Comfortably and casually. There is no dress code at Appleby and we welcome you just as you are.

I'm new to church. How will I know what to do at the right time?

At the front door, a greeter will hand you a church bulletin that you can follow. Words to scripture passages, responsive readings and hymns are projected on a screen at the front of the church. There is no need to feel self-conscious - you can't make a mistake!

What if I don't know anyone else who goes to Appleby Church?

Lots of people come to church on their own. There are no designated pews so you can sit wherever you like.  Please be sure to let one of the ushers know that you are a visitor, however we promise you won't be singled out in any way.

How much money should I put in the collection plate?

There is no required donation from you. Should you become a regular, you may want to think about what amount you can afford to contribute towards supporting what we do. No offering is ever considered too small.

What if I can't sing very well or don't know the hymns?

There is no obligation to sing along but we think you'll soon feel like joining in. We have a wonderful choir that makes sure our combined voices sound great! The words to the hymns are projected on a screen at the front of the church or you can use the hymn books in the pews.

What if I'm not baptized?

Baptism is a very personal thing. We do not require that you be baptized to participate fully at Appleby. At the same time, should you feel this is something you'd like to pursue, you are invited to discuss it with our Minister.

What if I happen to come when they are serving communion?

You will hear us say "Everyone is welcome at the table." That means you may join if you are sincerely seeking to follow Christ. There is no pressure either way. Like baptism, receiving communion is a personal choice.

Is there a preferred time of year to start going to church?

You are most welcome to start coming to Appleby Church on any Sunday of the year. Some people begin by attending church on special occasions, like Easter or Christmas, but there is no need to wait - the best time is this coming Sunday!

Do I need to be a member to get married at Appleby?

At Appleby United Church, we respect and appreciate covenant relationships. This is an intimate, exciting and important time in your life and we would be pleased to help you celebrate your love for each other in a faithful, holy way. You do not have to be a member of Appleby to have a wedding here, but we would encourage you to come and meet the congregation.
