Committees and Structure

Appleby United Church could not function without all the work of our many Committees. There is a committee for every set of skills out there, so if you are looking to get involved, we have a space for you!

Appleby Board:  The Official Board of Appleby Church meets on the third Monday of every month, except July and August, and consists of lay members of the church and the Minister, providing overall governance, direction and approvals regarding the life and work of the church.

Board of Trustees: In addition to the regular business of administering various trust accounts and assuring the Church has adequate insurance coverage, the Trustees meet as required to fulfill their duties, usually about four times a year.

Finance Committee: The Finance Committee prepares and manages the annual church budget.

Ministry & Personnel Committee:  This committee seeks volunteers to collectively bring a blend of experience in human resources, organization & development, compensation, management and conflict resolution. It is a confidential, consultative body that acts in a supportive role for both the ministry personnel and staff.

Outreach Committee:  The Outreach Committee facilitates the efforts of our congregation to help our neighbours, near and far, by raising funds and providing countless hours of volunteer work in partnership with many organizations and initiatives.  The Global Outreach Committee is a sub-committee which focuses on international projects.

Pastoral Care: To assist the Minister in attending to the Pastoral Care needs of the congregation facilitating support and care where and when it is needed.

Presbytery Committee:  This committee provides representation at the United Church of Canada presbytery meetings.

Property Committee: Volunteers do many different but essential tasks including opening/closing the Church building, coordinating the pancake supper, the spring and fall cleanups, garden maintenance and fundraising events.

Social Committee:  The Committee’s mandate is to provide refreshments for the Annual General Meeting in January, the Church Picnic in June and the Welcome Back Sunday in September.  Events are also catered to raise funds for various initiatives.

Stewardship Committee: To nurture, facilitate and engage members and potential members of the congregation in identifying and committing their time, talents and treasures to Appleby on an ongoing basis.

Technology Committee: This committee maintains the electronic systems in the church, including the computers, website, phone system, sound system, projectors and copier. Our meetings are the first Monday of most months and occasionally we have work sessions to adjust and improve the systems.

Worship Committee: This committee coordinates lay readers, ushers, and greeters for weekly services. The Committee consists of a small but dedicated team that strives to make our worship experience meaningful. We meet monthly and exchange communications throughout the year to support our staff in the development of our Sunday Service.

If you are interested in getting involved in any of the above groups we encourage you to contact the office for more information at 905-637-2942 or applebyoffice@applebychurch.ca.
